As the use of internet increases, so does cyber crime. With no or less protection on a website, the access to data becomes easy to approach. Cyber criminals around the globe can access data on poorly protected websites and can use it against the interests of the site owner. In emerging countries the risk of encountering cybercrime is greater as compared to others. Turkey is one of these countries with an increased cybercrime probability with the increased use of internet.
Cyber Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has made an extensive research over cybercrime that is being and is to be faced by Turkey. CSIS made use of vast networks of sensors to detect botnet activities. Statistical results on cyber infections have also been developed. The findings of this study mainly focus on the fact that Turkey is more exposed to cybercrime because internet usage is amplified whereas prevention is limited. As we speak of internet usage, our main focus is on businesses. More businesses are utilizing internet for their work activities such as contacting clients, displaying information, emails etcetera. As an organization engages in increased internet usage with minimum prevention, the website or data on it attracts more cyber criminals.
The study carried out by CSIS reveals that emerging countries such as Turkey itself is at an increased risk of cyber offence. When compared to countries such as Germany with available cyber protection; Turkey has 37 times more Sality and 1.6 times more Zeus Gameover infections. A campaign is being carried out for the awareness of botnets that are being used aggressively to target businesses. Research shows that botnets have been used to carry out cybercrime at 2,000 different organizations in Turkey and probably many more not identified; in a matter of 12 months only.
